JSHS invites high school students to report on the results of their original research investigations in STEM and compete for scholarships and recognition at university-held regional symposia. Students in grades 9-12 enrolled in public, private, or home schools are eligible to participate in their local Regional Symposium. See Rules of Competition for eligibility details. There is no cost to register for or participate in a regional JSHS event. If you are asked to pay a fee to register, please contact us at admin@jshs.org.

Any student who starts a research project and intends to submit their research at the regional JSHS competition is able to sign up for virtual mentoring through the Chronus platform. The mentor resource is available year-round to support you throughout the JSHS competition season and the non-competition time of completing research or improving continued projects. Join Chronus as a mentee here.

All New Mexico high schools are eligible to participate in the Southwest Regional JSHS. Additionally, Texas high schools located in the Trans-Pecos region or west of I-27, US-87, or I-20 should participate in the Southwest Regional JSHS. Texas students who are unsure which region to participate in should reach out to the Texas JSHS for guidance.

The Southwest Region also includes a portion of Colorado; high schools located south of Highway 50, including all of Pueblo, should participate in the Southwest Regional JSHS. Colorado students who attend high schools north of Highway 50 should participate in the Wyoming and Colorado Regional JSHS.

For the 2024-2025 school year, the Southwest Regional JSHS will be hosted online by the Virtual JSHS region. The Southwest regional JSHS event will be held in a virtual format simultaneously with the Virtual JSHS event, but will have its own separate awards. The Southwest JSHS region will have 3 JSHS scholarship winners and 5 student delegates invited to the National JSHS. The regional event will take place virtually on February 20-21, 2025.

Symposium dates: February 20-21, 2025

Deadline for student applications: February 1, 2025
